What is Botox®?

What is Botox®?

The word Botox is often used to describe an anti-wrinkle treatment but Botox® is actually a drug made from botulinum toxin A which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.  In large doses the neurotoxin protein causes botulism, a rare paralytic illness often linked to food poisoning.  However the protein has been used very successfully for over 10 years in cosmetic medicine to temporarily treat moderate to severe glabellar lines (frown lines).

Different Brand Names

Botulinum toxin A is sold commercially under different brand names including Botox, Vistabel, Azzalure, Dysport, Boucouture and Xeomin.

Can Botulinum Toxin A be used for other Indications?

Yes it can and has been used for over 20 years to treat other medical conditions.  It is also used to treat the following conditions -

Hyperhidrosis - excessive underarm sweating ; Blepharospasm - uncontrolled blinking ; Strabismus - misaligned eyes ; Cervical dystonia - a neurological condition which causes severe neck and shoulder muscle contractions ; an overactive bladder; migraine headaches and even some cases of people suffering from depression.

How does it Work?

The protein is administered into the muscles by a series of small injections and works by blocking the nerve impulses to the muscles so they can no longer contract therefore relaxing and softening any lines and wrinkles.  It can take up to 14 days to see the full result but most patients start to see an improvement after 4 days and results can last 4-6 months, after which another treatment would be required.

 What are the Side Effects?

As with any medication, side effects can happen and include pain at the injection site, bruising, flu-like symptoms, headache, drooping of the upper eyelid and upset stomach.

You should not have treatment if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

At Allure Aesthetics Glasgow, we offer both Botox and Azzalure to treat facial lines and wrinkles and after performing a full medical consultation to assess your suitability for treatment, we will assess your face and recommend what treatment would provide the most aesthetically pleasing and natural look to enhance your natural beauty.

We are an established non-surgical aesthetic company based in Glasgow, offering a huge array of treatments that include anti-wrinkle injections.
